Julie Scrivener gives The Kalamazoo Singers a No. 1 Pick for Classical Concerts:
The Kalamazoo Singers' February concert at Western Michigan University's Dalton Center Recital Hall. Led by Thomas Kasdorf, they celebrated Black History Month with a wonderfully diverse program that was highlighted by the area premiere of an 1816 "Requiem" by Afro-Brazilian composer Mauricio Nunes Garcia. Although they are a small group, the Singers demonstrated their remarkable versatility and exemplary choral technique in a variety of other selections that featured many of their members in solo roles.
C.J. Gianakaris gives Carmen a Pick for Opera:
Long remembered will be the semi-staged opera "Carmen," which served as the opening concert of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra season. This wonderful production starred terrific Angela Horn, a last-minute replacement.
